Set in the ever-expanding Touhou Project universe, Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity eschews the series’ shoot-em-up roots in favor of a more action RPG approach, drawing heavy inspiration from Ys in its world and gameplay designs while still retaining its indie roots, having originated as a fan-made game in homage to the legendary ‘bullet-hell’ series. Featuring a wide variety of natural settings presented in high-definition, along with a variety of flashy attacks, tricky platforming, and even some destructible environments, players will have plenty to explore and lots to do as they fight their way through the game’s myriad of aggressive creatures. Combat occurs in real-time, with fast-paced, frenetic maneuvering being a must to avoid the enemies’ complex patterns and waves of projectiles. The action is tied together by a simple yet charming story that draws upon the Touhou Project’s 20 years of lore to help characterize its two playable protagonists, Remilia and Sakuya, adding to the experience for series fans while providing a great jumping-in point for newcomers.
